TEACHING

Since 2011, I am in charge of the permanent workshop of World music and Ethnomusicology at the Jazz Department of the PSPBB Pole in Paris, France.

This cursus approaches some basic tools and aesthetic elements of Modal Improvisation in World music, mainly focusing on Hindustani Raga, Turkish Makam and Contemporary Pan-Balkan music. An initiation to South Andean Siku Panpipe playing is also included, as an introduction to dualistic conceptions of rhythm and music making.

In general, our workshop proposes a comparative approach on some essential aspects of music, as pitch (scales, modes, melodic systematization), rhythm (meters, cycles, patterns), form (structural determination and the space-time relationship within the social context of music praxis) and aesthetics (through the production and perceptions of pitch, tone and phrasing). It emphasizes a theory and practical initiation for a “non-traditional” musicians willing to perform in contemporary World Music, Folk and Ethno-Jazz projects, whether it be in a professional or amateur context.

This workshop lasts one academic year and is opened mainly to Major Jazz students. Nevertheless, students from Classical Western music and Popular music backgrounds are also welcomed. A Facebook group ("Musiques Traditionnelles au PSBB") remains opened to anyone willing to follow the current work and activities of this workshop.
